Where to shop and eat in Carmei Gat

Carmei Gat's three shopping centres, the Wednesday shuk in Kiryat Gat, how kashrut works here (the council's list shows 'regular' only) and the habits that catch newcomers out.

Each part of Carmei Gat has a shopping centre within reach, and the older city adds a weekly market and bigger malls. Browse restaurants and cafés, groceries and bakeries and shops.

The three centres in Carmei Gat

From the community site (community site (opens in a new tab)):

  • Gat Center (south): three indoor storeys with free underground parking, Shufersal, Clalit and Maccabi clinics, a pharmacy and a gym. Biscotti's dairy café is here, open Sun-Thu 08:00-21:00 and Fri 07:30-15:00 (Biscotti (opens in a new tab)).
  • Big Carmei Gat (centre): open-air, with Rami Levy underground. Big lists it at 153 Lachish Blvd, opened in 2024, 12,000 m² of shops, two levels of parking and about 57 tenants, open Sun-Thu 09:30-21:30, Fri 09:00-14:00 and Saturday night from half an hour after Shabbat to 22:30 (Big (opens in a new tab)). Food tenants include Pizza Kadosh, McDonald's, Roladin, Café Lyon, Just Meat and Katzefet ice cream.
  • Reisdor (north): a ground-floor strip on Esther HaMalka St with eateries and bakeries; Carrefour Market is a few doors along.

Kashrut: read this first

The Kiryat Gat Religious Council publishes a searchable list of 191 certified businesses, and every entry shows the level "regular" (כשרות רגילה) (Religious Council (opens in a new tab)). The national kashrut portal shows only 9 sites for the council, mostly event halls, so the council's own list is the better source (Ministry of Religious Services (opens in a new tab)). I didn't find a Carmei Gat place listed as mehadrin. Some chains carry their own certificate: Pizza Shemesh's Carmei Gat branch lists BADATZ Beit Yosef (Pizza Shemesh (opens in a new tab)). Always look at the certificate on the wall.

Some English-speaking home businesses sell food and describe a "kosher kitchen" without a hechsher, so ask about supervision before ordering. I've only listed places with a certificate on the council's list.

Kiryat Gat's markets and malls

  • The Wednesday shuk is in the car park at the bottom of HaGefen St, usually fully open by 08:00 and closing around 18:00, with a fruit and vegetable market on HaAvodah St at the same time. Parking is hard on Wednesdays; the community site suggests parking at the library and walking (community site (opens in a new tab)).
  • Kiryat Gat has four more centres: Yishpro and Big Kiryat Gat are larger, iSolomon and the Lev HaIr mall smaller. iSolomon has Bleecker café, Golda ice cream and a bowling alley that opened in June 2026.

Habits that catch newcomers out

Many Kiryat Gat shops close early on Tuesday and/or between 14:00 and 16:00 on weekdays (community site (opens in a new tab)). The big supermarkets and Big's chain stores keep longer hours. Government self-service kiosks for printing documents are in Super-Pharm at Big Carmei Gat (gov.il (opens in a new tab)).
