Ask anyone in the English-speaking community where they live and you'll hear a number: 01, 02, 03 or 07. That numbering comes from the community site, not from the municipality, and I couldn't confirm exactly which streets belong to each part (community site (opens in a new tab)). I use it here because it's what people say. Try the neighbourhood matcher to weigh them up.
The shape of the neighbourhood
Carmei Gat sits on Kiryat Gat's northern side, between Route 40 to the west and the railway to the east. A Mako feature noted that shops are planned in most parts but residents depend heavily on cars (Mako (opens in a new tab)). Three bridges over Route 35 and several tunnels under it link it to the rest of the city (Hebrew Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Each part has a shopping centre nearby: Gat Center in the south, Big in the centre and Reisdor in the north (community site (opens in a new tab)).
It is still being finished. In 2026 the municipality was completing the final stage in compounds 07 and 02: asphalt, paving, lighting, roundabouts, gardens and play equipment, street by street as buildings fill (municipality (opens in a new tab)).
01 (west)
Nearest the bridge to the rest of Kiryat Gat. Many English-speaking families daven in the new Nechalim minyan here, and Yachad has its permanent building in 01 (community site (opens in a new tab)). The Sha'ar HaIr terminal at the western entrance has the Kavim 132 to Beitar Illit, and intercity buses stop at Tzomet Plugot. Directory: 01.
02 (central)
Dense towers and lots of gans, with Big Carmei Gat (Rami Levy, Super-Pharm, cafés) and the free Sportek. The Friday-night Happy Clappy and Snappy Zappy minyanim meet here, and the small Gabso and Shabazi parks are the local playgrounds (community site (opens in a new tab)).
03 (north)
The newer north, with streets named after women, the Reisdor strip mall, the Castle park, Reisdor's fish pond and the bus terminal where city lines start. Carmei Zion broke ground on its permanent building here in September 2025 (community site (opens in a new tab)). Ulpanat Kiryat Gat, the religious girls' high school, is on Esther HaMalka St (Ministry of Education data (opens in a new tab)).
07 (south) and Avnei HaChoshen
The south is built around Gat Center (Clalit and Maccabi clinics, Shufersal) and Nofech St (the matnas and Cramim school). Avnei HaChoshen, along the boulevard of the same name, has an English-speaking cluster; families meet at the Ropes park in the afternoons, and Carmei Zion's current address is 74 Sderot Avnei HaChoshen (community site (opens in a new tab)). On Shabbat afternoons English speakers gather at the Makolet park near Carmei Zion around mincha.
Carmei Gat North and East (planned)
Hebrew Wikipedia describes about 7,500 homes in Carmei Gat on about 3,000 dunams, with a planned Carmei Gat North of about 6,000 more (Hebrew Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Separately, a July 2026 report says the national housing committee approved the Carmei Gat East plan for deposit: about 11,000 homes across the railway, with commerce and buildings up to 23 storeys (Nadlan Center (opens in a new tab)). Neither is lived in yet.
The older city
Kiryat Gat was founded in 1954. Its older neighbourhoods include Glickson, HaBanim, HaMagdim, HaPrachim, Tzahal, Sha'ar Darom and Ha'apala, Malchei Yisrael and HaKomemiyut, and the Kirya Charedit (Chabad Kiryat Gat (opens in a new tab)). It has the train station, post office, library, Wednesday shuk and government offices, and housing is generally older. Directory: Kiryat Gat.
